Iced Mocha- Healthy Coffee DrinksĀ

Unbeknownst to many people, Mocha is not actually the blended coffee drink (typically with chocolate and milk) that has become ubiquitous across America and Asia. Mocha is in fact a type of coffee bean with a characteristic bold and slightly bitter taste, thought to originate in Yemen. These last few decades though, thanks to coffee chains like Starbucks, the term “mocha” is synonymous with a coffee-chocolate mixed drink. Personally, I love the original mocha bean’s distinctive aroma, but for the purposes of this healthy coffee drink, we’ll use “mocha” as its now popular meaning- coffee with chocolate. Instead of those sugar-laden drinks at coffee chains, my healthy version of Ice Mocha preserves the natural sweetness of dark chocolate. As per the recipe, you have the option of adding sugar in if you like a bit of sweetness.

Makes 2 tall glasses (as pictured) or 4 small glasses

Ingredients

2 cups coffee, cold or at room temp

1 cup cold milk (use any type you like, I use skim milk here)

4 pieces dark chocolate roughly chopped (~4 tablespoons)

1 cup ice cubes or crushed

1 tablespoon sugar (optional)

Method

Place all the ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. Serve immediately.
