Best Asian Appetizers- Bacon Wrapped Mochi

I kid you not when I say that you should make three times as much as you think will be eaten of this sweet and savory appetizer. Every single time I have made this for dinner parties or beach gatherings, family and friends have devoured this and there’s never enough. I first discovered this addictive morsel in little food stalls in Japan. Imagine a cold day and biting into crisp bacon drizzled with teriyaki glaze wrapped around hot, chewy mochi (rice cake). I can’t think of a better finger food to start any party!

Makes 8 skewers

Ingredients

8 skewers

16 mochi sticks (rice cake sticks)

5 bacon slices, cut into 3-inch pieces

Sweet soy sauce for drizzling

Method

In a small pot, bring water to a vigorous boil on high heat. Carefully drop in the mocha sticks and cook for a few minutes until the mocha is floating on top. Drain the mocha onto a flat plate, making sure that there is space between each mochi so they don’t stick together.

Wrap each mochi in the bacon slices to create a little burrito-like shape. Slide two bacon wrapped mocha onto each skewer tip.

Heat a non-stick skillet on medium high heat. Place the skewers on the skillet and cook for 3 to 4 minutes on each side until the bacon is crispy. Place skewers on a serving plate. Drizzle the bacon wrapped mochi with sweet soy sauce and serve immediately.
