For millennia all over Asia, women have created all natural body scrubs to soften, smoothen and stimulate their skin. This “Awakening” body scrub is one of my all time favorites, originating in Bali, the island paradise world renowned for its luxury spas. The inclusion of coffee, clove and ginger, all ingredients believed to stimulate and draw out impurities, has made this one of the most popular spa treatments in Bali.

My recipe below is for a one-time use, but you can easily multiply the recipe and store it properly to keep for future use. For a total at-home spa treatment, you can follow the body scrub with the traditional Balinese yogurt body mask by lathering plain yogurt all over and leaving it on for a few minutes before rinsing thoroughly.

Ingredients
1/3 cup course sea salt
3 tablespoons ground coffee
1 tablespoon ground cloves
1 tablespoon ground ginger

Method

Combine all the ingredients in a medium sized container and shake or toss together until thoroughly mixed. 

Body scrubs are most effective when used on dry skin before you shower or bathe. Once you’re in the shower or bathtub, mix a couple of tablespoons of warm water into the dry mixture and stir with your fingers until it reaches a thick, pasty consistency. Apply to one section of your body at a time, scrubbing firmly, especially on elbows, knees, thighs and feet.

Rinse thoroughly. Follow with yogurt body mask if using.
