Serves 4

Ingredients
1 whole fresh daikon (~1 1/2 lbs), peeled & chopped into bite sized chunks
4 oz fresh lotus root, sliced thinly
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
10 cloves garlic, mashed
2 cups vegetable broth, chicken broth or water
1 tablespoon soy sauce
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon Chinese 5 spice powder
1/2 teaspoon sesame oil

Method

In a wok or pot, heat the oil on high heat. Saute the garlic for 1 to 2 minutes until fragrant and lightly browned. Add the chopped daikon and lotus root, tossing together gently. Lower to medium high heat. Allow to sit for about 3 to 4 minutes, tossing occasionally in between.

Pour in the broth or water, soy sauce, sugar and Chinese 5 spice powder. Simmer on medium high heat for 25 to 30 minutes, stirring gently occasionally. Add the sesame oil, stirring gently. Turn off the heat. Serve very warm with jasmine white rice.
