Hammacher Schlemmer Oil-less Air Fryer
To this day I have yet to meet a person who doesn’t love crispy, crunchy, finger-licking delicious fried food. I have of course, encountered numerous people who stay far away from fried foods, treating these diabolical temptresses like the black plague due to its unhealthy properties. I, for one, am always a moderate, always going for the middle path. I don’t think it’s prudent to subsist on fried foods as a regular part of one’s diet but I do believe a once in a while indulgence is important for the soul.
Having said that, I will always welcome the opportunity to discover new ways of cooking that will result in the same texture and flavor that we’ve come to love of fried foods if this new method will allow us to shed the unhealthy aspects of deep frying.
Enter Hammacher Schlemmer’s Oil-less Air Fryer, a nifty kitchen gadget that should find its way into the home of every serious foodie out there. If you are a big fan of French fries, crispy fried chicken and the like, you will benefit from this ingenious appliance that takes up about half a square foot of kitchen counter space. This oil-less air fryer uses infrared technology that basically circulates hot air up to 400 degrees Fahrenheit through and around the food you’re “frying.”
You can liken this to a convection oven but there’s one huge difference in how this works. Because you’re placing your food in an elevated stainless steel basket, the hot air circulates all around the food, unlike when you’re placing food on a baking sheet in the oven. This total circulation of the hot air is what allows for the crisping action to happen. When cooking foods that have inherent fat- like chicken wings, you’ll be amazed at how much of the wings’ fat collects on the drip tray. You end up with crispy, finger-licking good “fried” chicken wings without all the oil from deep frying and you’ve essentially rendered out its own fat.
To be clear, the recipes you use will have to be altered to include a few tablespoons of olive oil (or whatever oil you choose) to be brushed on the food you intend to cook. For example, when I made a basket of chicken wings, I added a few tablespoons of olive oil to my other herbs and spices, whereas with regular deep frying, I would not add olive oil since the wings are going into a vat of oil. With Hammacher Schlemmer’s Oil-less Fryer, you’re able to significantly cut down on the calories and fat of “fried” foods by up to 80%.
Yuca Frita- one of my all time favorite fried treats, came out perfectly in this oil-less fryer. I was thrilled to be able to indulge in such a comfort food with so much less guilt.
The Hammacher Schlemmer Oil-less Fryer is a must-have for foodies who love fried foods and especially for parents who want to introduce their kids to healthier foods without compromising on flavor and texture. At just under US $250, this kitchen gadget is an asset to anyone concerned with healthy eating.
