Acupuncture and Fertility

Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine have helped couples struggling with infertility for generations in Asia and more recently, here in the Western hemisphere.  To achieve optimum results, it’s important to treat both the male and female parties involved by balancing the body. Though a  large percentage of the time infertility is caused by issues with the males’ sperm, balancing the body of both parties is critical.

“Balancing” refers to addressing hormonal imbalances- an important and frequent cause of infertility. The issue of infertility is a complicated one and Chinese medicine believes there are many causes. There are some cases of excess, some of deficiency, and sometimes both simultaneously.

In our practice we have helped a number of patients achieve successful pregnancies through the use of acupuncture and Chinese herbs… Often, these patients are at the end of their rope, having tried and failed with other avenues and suffering the heartbreak of being told they would be unable to have children.

There isn’t one standard protocol for treating infertility because there are so many causes. We’ve treated patients who were so stressed out from failed IVF (in-vitro fertilization) attempts that we started their treatment not with a fertility based plan but with a calming, relaxing strategy. Often these patients become pregnant naturally with a few months of treatment with acupuncture and herbs, even though we didn’t focus on fertility. By balancing their bodies we were able to promote a healthier environment for a successful pregnancy to take place.

We also help many of our female patients with the IVF process which can be  highly emotional as they  are taking a fair amount of hormones. Acupuncture and Chinese medicine are very helpful in making the whole IVF process smoother by again balancing the body, hormones, calming and relaxing the patient, which all help the body to not reject the IVF treatment and implantation.  An increasing number of fertility patients in the West are recognizing the immense benefits of acupuncture and Chinese medicine. Statistics show the rate of IVF success dramatically improves when implemented in conjunction with acupuncture and Chinese medicine.
