In the food capital of the west with sophisticated and often snobbish palates, it is excruciatingly difficult for a restaurant to stand out among countless competitors. In San Francisco, where there is an extraordinarily high concentration of Asian eateries, what is the new kid on the culinary block supposed to do? At Ken Ken Ramen, three youthful guys decided the only way and the right way to do ramen was to honor Japanese tradition.

Ken Ken’s three owners are comprised of one native Japanese guy who is also the head chef and two American guys who grew up in Japan, enveloped in age-old traditions. After immersing in Japan’s ramen culture, they set out to create a familiar and comforting culinary experience in San Francisco, hoping to re-educate local palates on the original flavors and textures of this ever popular noodle.

In a short period of time Ken Ken has already become a local favorite, patronized by everybody from students to professionals and Asian grandparents. Once you get past the long line, a minimalist, contemporary interior awaits, reminiscent of modern noodle bars in Tokyo. Front of house plays host to the Boba Guys, another San Francisco newcomer specializing in high quality bubble tea. Ramen and bubble tea- can it really get better than that?

An extremely tight and well devised menu simplifies decision making so guests can focus on the exquisite flavors of Miso, Shoyu and Shio ramen. Each bowl of piping hot soup is generously laden with Cha Siu (barbecue pork), an assortment of fresh vegetables, seaweed and most importantly, a soft boiled egg. What’s the big deal about a soft boiled egg, you ask? Ken Ken’s eggs are simmered to perfection, their whites a plump, savory goodness and their yolks an orgasmic burst of creaminess. If you can stop making love to the yolks, you’ll find an equally lovely experience slurping the hand-cut ramen whose voluptuous texture evokes memories of a bygone Edo era.

While menu offerings include a small selection of well done appetizers and desserts, the show stealer is most definitely the ramen. Add a cute mug of the Boba Guy’s organic milk bubble tea and you’ve got a comfort meal that’ll leave a smile on your face all week. No wonder the place is always packed.
